DICTIONARIES & ENCYCLOPEDIAS

Atkinson D. and D. Field (1995). New dictionary of Christian ethics & pastoral theology. IVP.

Probably the most useful single book for this course; worthy buying; generally good introductory articles on all subjects; some excellent long articles in Part One; from an evangelical perspective.

Childress, J. F. and J. Macquarrie (1990). A new dictionary of Christian ethics. SCM.

Short articles on most subjects in theory and practice; more dated than IVP; a broader theological spectrum; worth referring to relevant article(s) when beginning to read on a subject.

Clarke, P. A. B. and A. Linzey (1996). Dictionary of ethics, theology and society. Routledge.

Focussed on issues more than concepts and the historical and contemporary inter-relation between Judaeo-Christian theology and evolution of Western political, social and ethical structures. Sometimes strange mix of topics but should be helpful e.g. on capital punishment, justice, law, liberalism, marriage, peace, violence, welfare.

McGrath Alister, E. (1993). The Blackwell encyclopedia of modern Christian thought. Blackwell.

Although not an ethics dictionary this has the following helpful articles:

  • Economic Analysis (134-40)
  • Ethics (164-83)
  • Justice (289-93)
  • Just War (287-9)
  • Kingdom of God (304-9)
  • Love (350-4)
  • Medical (366-9)
  • Natural Law (398-402)
